TITLE: School Social Worker QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors Degree in social work REPORTS TO: Building Principals JOB GOAL:
- To work intensively on a one-to-one basis with those students who have been unable to function effectively in school because of truancy, non-attendance, behavior, and/or home problems.
- The social worker will provide non-judgmental support and encouragement to students and their families.
- The social worker will also assist with student problems of a crisis nature and direct students and families to appropriate resources in the community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintains an office on school premises open to students and their families.
- Consults and cooperates with guidance counselors, nurses, principals, and classroom teachers in assessing the mental and emotional state of the individual students who need intervention strategies.
- Counsels parents to improve home situations and serves as a liaison between parents and school regarding schoolwork, behavior, attendance, and interest.
- Serves as liaison between the school and outside agencies such as the Division of Family Services, Juvenile Court and other agencies responsible for child welfare.
- Keeps staff informed of responsibilities of reporting child abuse/neglect. Works with teachers, parents, and students regarding such matters.
- Makes appropriate reports to the child abuse/neglect hotline as the law requires.
- Makes home visits to gather helpful information on the student's background and develop cooperative home-school relationships.
- Helps families make appropriate social agencies contact when needed.
- Participates with other members of the student personnel team in case conferences and regular staff meetings.
- Investigates attendance problems.
- Counsels students and parents in matters of attendance and tardiness.
- Works with families to improve attendance.
- Makes referrals to DFS or Prosecuting Attorney when necessary.
- Maintains and updates the directory of referral services to be utilized in crisis situations affecting students, such as suicide threats and alcohol and/or drug problems.
- Assists counselors and administrators in outlining and implementing preventive programs for possible "at-risk" students.
- Participates in Special Education Staffings and other Special Education meetings as requested by the building principal.
- Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his/her designee.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Ten-month school year (200 days).
Salary and work year to be established by the Board. EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on the evaluation of non-certified personnel. |
