The Kingston K-14 School District is looking for an outstanding individual to fill a Guidance Counselor position for the Primary/Elementary building for the 2026-2027 school year. JOB TITLE: Elementary Counselor
QUALIFICATIONS
- Meet all legal requirements established by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education for an Elementary Counselor's certificate.
- Successful experience in education, with a minimum of two years as a classroom teacher
- Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Education may find appropriate.
REPORTS TO: Building Principal and Director of Student Services
JOB GOAL: To implement a comprehensive guidance program for the students in grades K-5 that includes a guidance curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
I. Guidance Curriculum and Instruction
- Implement the elementary guidance curriculum as approved by the Board of Education.
- Conduct planned guidance learning activities in collaboration with administration and faculty.
- Assist teachers in integrating guidance activities into the regular classroom curriculum.
- Introduce students to concepts of career awareness and exploration.
- Promote student self-awareness and understanding of individual strengths and abilities.
- Educate students regarding the relationship between educational achievement and future career opportunities.
- Provide resources and materials to support career awareness and exploration initiatives.
II. Counseling Services
- Provide individual and small group counseling to students as needed.
- Address developmental and situational concerns, including but not limited to:
- Peer relationships
- Family issues
- Behavioral concerns
- Academic challenges
- Substance abuse prevention
- Child abuse awareness and reporting
3. Refer students with significant concerns to appropriate community agencies in consultation with parents/guardians and administration.
III. Student Advocacy and Support Services
- Serve as an advocate for students in collaboration with school personnel.
- Assist in the identification and placement of students in appropriate educational programs, including Special Education, Gifted Education, 504 Plans, and other support services.
- Participate as a team member in the implementation of district and building-level testing programs.
- Interpret group assessment results for faculty and staff.
- Participate in staffings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and related conferences.
IV. Consultation and Collaboration
- Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding the developmental needs of students.
- Conduct and participate in conferences with students, parents/guardians, and faculty.
- Collaborate with school personnel, including psychologists, nurses, and administrators.
- Consult and coordinate with community agencies, including mental health providers, physicians, and social service organizations.
V. Program Development, Evaluation, and Community Relations
- Coordinate and participate in activities that contribute to the effective operation of the school.
- Develop and promote public awareness of the school counseling program.
- Communicate guidance initiatives through local media and community presentations as appropriate.
- Evaluate and revise the building guidance program in collaboration with staff and administration.
VI. Professional Responsibilities
- Pursue ongoing professional growth and development.
- Attend state and local staff development programs.
- Maintain active membership in appropriate professional organizations (e.g., MSCA, AACD, ASCA).
- Participate in workshops, conferences, and post-graduate coursework to maintain certification and professional competence.
VII. Additional Duties
Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Superintendent, Principal, or other administrative personnel.
EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated using a performance-based system in accordance with the Board of Education Policy for certificated personnel.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary, workday, and year to be established by the Board of Education. Counselors will be
employed fifteen additional days beyond the normal teaching contract year (195/180). If starting in Year 3 (with a Master's as stated in the qualifications) and contracted at 185 days, starting pay could be approximately $48,316. |
