POSITION: Bus Mechanic
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Skilled mechanic with knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair and maintenance.
- CDL License with passenger and school bus endorsement preferred.
- Diesel Engine Repair.
- Be able to communicate effectively with staff, students, and families.
REPORTS TO : Superintendent
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Maintains, inspects and repairs School District vehicles, including tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order.
- Can independently perform skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, school buses and other mechanical and mobile equipment and has the ability to use trade tools and equipment such as engine diagnosis, tire changers, wheel balancers, front-end alignment equipment plus normal hand wrenches and related tools.
- Performs and logs preventative maintenance and diagnostics on all District Vehicles
- Works with the secretary to complete work orders and submits forms to the superintendent.
- Maintains a valid and current CDL license or will obtain one.
- Prepares District buses for the annual State inspection.
- Maintains records for transportation and bus inspections.
- Conducts emergency repairs when necessary; provides roadside service to District drivers and determines whether to tow vehicles or repair on-site, during and after school hours.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all bus routes.
- Assists the secretary in preparing reports that include number of passengers and trips, hours worked, mileage and fuel consumption.
- General clean up inside and outside the bus garage.
- Full time substitute driver in order to help when needed.
- When all bus mechanic work is complete for the day, performs various building maintenance jobs such as grass cutting; etc., as directed by the maintenance director or superintendent.
- Ability to set own priorities for the timely completion of assignments.
- Ability to work with vendors while picking up parts.
- Ability to work with drivers to discuss maintenance problems or repairs.
- Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems based on vehicle performance systems.
- Informs the Superintendent of any vehicle violations during/outside of work that warranted a traffic ticket or could hinder the validity of his/her CDL or Driver license.
MARGINAL DUTIES:
- Orders and inventories parts, supplies and equipment.
- Attends training as needed to ensure adherence to safety and security standards.
- Performs additional tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as assigned by the superintendent.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; use repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movements; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl or lay down, talk or hear.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to wet or humid conditions (weather and non-weather); work near moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration.
- The employee is occasionally exposed to work in high, precarious places; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (weather and non-weather); extreme heat (weather and non-weather) and risk of electrical shock.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Salary and work year to be in accordance with current pay plan and District policy. Health Insurance. Approximate salary $42,000. We have 10 large buses, 2 mini-buses, plus 4 spare buses. 12 month contract (260 days).
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with District policy on evaluation of support staff.
